Prince William shared a sweet moment with a war veteran on the 80th anniversary of D-Day as he spoke about how his wife, the Princess of Wales, is doing amid her cancer diagnosis

The royal has been meeting with veterans and members of the public in Arromanches, Normandy, France, as today (June 6) marks the 80th anniversary commemorations of the Normandy invasion in WWII. The Prince of Wales met with veterans and members of the public and praised their “extraordinary acts of bravery and sacrifice”. One individual on X dubbed his speech as “gut-wrenching”.

The future King took on his first duties deputising for King Charles at a sombre D-Day event, after it was ruled the occasion would be “step too far” for His Majesty amid his cancer treatment. William put on a brave face despite both his father and wife being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. He spoke to veterans at the Canadian commemoration on Juno beach and spoke to locals in Arromanches.

King Charles shared a health update amid his battle with cancer, telling one D-Day veteran in Normandy that he is “doing well”. Since she bravely told the world about her cancer diagnosis, the Princess of Wales has been inundated with messages of support from well-wishers – and today was no different.

While speaking to a veteran, Prince William said his wife would have “loved” to join in with the commemorations, as she continues to recover following her cancer diagnosis. An elderly gentlemen, proudly wearing a Union Jack flag and his war medals, said: “I was going to ask you if your wife was getting any better?”

William said: “Yes, she would have loved to have been here today. I was reminding everybody, her grandmother served at Bletchley so she would have had quite a bit in common with a few of the other ladies here who served at Bletchley but never spoke about it until the very end.”

Royal fans applaud the prince and rushed to comment as a video of the sweet interaction was shared on X. “Got to love this man for his respectful question about the princess,” wrote one.

What a lovely person he is,” added another. A third said: “So sweet that this mighty war hero asks sweetly after the health of the Princess. These are truly decent people.”

Speaking of William, another said: “His mum would be so proud of the gentleman his is. What a charming man.” Another commented: “Aw she definitely would have and how wonderful to hear she is doing really well.”
