Why Prince William Was at The Duke of Westminster’s Wedding and Prince Harry Wasn’t

Prince William has had a busy few days playing a key role leading the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. However, he took a break from his work responsibilities today to take on another role as an usher at the wedding of the Duke of Westminster in Chester.

Despite being several years younger than both that William and Harry, the Duke of Westminster, 33, has been firm friends with both royal brothers for his whole life. King Charles is his godfather. His mother Natalia is godmother to Prince William, and Princess Diana was godmother to one of his sisters Lady Edwina. He is godfather to both Prince George and Prince Archie. And throughout the bitter disagreements that have dogged William and Harry for the past four years, Hugh seems to have managed the undoubtedly not easy feat of remaining close with both of them.

Last December, a source confirmed to T&C that Harry and Meghan were not attending the wedding. It is understood they were not snubbed, but that the decision was reached by mutual agreement. There can be no doubt that the presence of both brothers would have dominated the headlines with speculation over the state of their relationship. And Harry does now live on the other side of the world.

Nevertheless, the fact that Harry did not go highlights further just how large the gulf now is between the royal brothers. They came together in mourning for the funerals of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth and they put their differences aside in 2021 to unveil a permanent memorial to Princess Diana in Kensington Gardens. But it has now become increasingly difficult to see any event or circumstances that has the capacity to bring them back together. This wedding certainly has not.
